There is a time of the year where acorns and other nuts are all over the place! Which means they are an easy thing to collect and use (while still leaving them for the squirrels).
You'll need:
A flat clear area
Bucket
Place where acorns have fallen
Directions:
Gather as many acorns as you can. Give your child prompts such as making rows to count, putting in specific number value, or in groups to show multiplication. Below each of these three are given more detail.
Have your child make random rows (or a row) of acorns for themselves to count as they go. See how high they can count! You can also make rows and have them guess or compare which is the longest.
Set out number cards and have your child match the value in acorns. You can have this be random, or line them up 1-5 or 1-10 to compare.
Have your child make groups of the same amount of number, then add them all together. Practice counting by 2's or 3's, and show that adding them all is the same as saying how ever many sets of.
Practice subtraction or addition by having a group of acorns, and asking what happens when you take away or add a certain amount.
