Recipe: Playdough

Writer's picture: Elizabeth GrussElizabeth Gruss

Make this playdough with your child to save a ton of money, customize your colors, and make memories. This recipe is a stovetop one. It is the best I have found and worth the extra step. Total time to make is probably 15 minutes or less. This playdough will be used all week so make sure you store it in a sealed container. You can make as many batches as you'd like.

You'll Need:

- 2 cups Flour

- 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil

- 2 cups Lukewarm Water

- 3/4 cup Salt

- 4 teaspoons Cream of TarTar

- Food Dye

Directions:

Mix all dry ingredients in a stove pot together. Next, stir in your water then oil. You'll want to in your food dye now, unless you are doing more than one color/batch. In that case, you will add it after it cooks, it's just a lot more kneading. Once everything is mixed, cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once it's forming a ball and not sticking to the sides, it's ready. Take off heat and place on something where it can cool- like large plate or cutting board. If you are separating to make multiple colors, separate and place into ziplock bags (or equivalent. Add food dye, close bag, and mix and knead with hands. This will keep hands from getting dyed, so children can help! Doubles as a calming activity. Once the colors are all mixed and your dough is cooled down enough, you are ready to play! Remember to store in a sealed container so it doesn't dry out!
