Cardboard Letters

Writer's picture: Elizabeth GrussElizabeth Gruss

This is a fun way to recognize letters, letter shapes, and even to practice sight words. You can use cardboard from leftover cereal boxes or other packaged foods, or even the cardboard from the last thing you got sent to your house. Most likely everyone has some cardboard lying around. Beyond that, there are several different ways to decorate the letters. Use what you have!

You'll need:

-Cardboard, cut into letters

-Paint or other craft supplies

-String or pipe cleaners

Directions:

Cut out letters. You can do one big one, the whole alphabet if you are ambitious, or, if you are following our at home preschool curriculum, your child's name (or first letter of name). For older children, you can trace letters for them to cut. Set out a letter at a time for your child to decorate. This helps them not only recognize letters, but practices the movements of writing letter lines. You can do this with paint, colored pencils, crayons, etc, or by gluing craft items such as feathers, or stickers. Once it's done and dried, additionally you can punch holes following the lines and curves of the letters, for your child to lace string or pipe cleaners through. This is just another way to learn the shapes, and extends the activity. When it's all done, you could even string the letters together and use it as decoration! Would look super cute above where you hang your child's art work.
