Cinnamon Play Dough

Why not add a little fall smell to your sensory play?

Below is my favorite play dough recipe. I've found with all sensory recipes, it sometimes takes a few times of trying before you get it totally right. Don't know why that is. Follow directions 100%.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup salt

  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

  • 2 cups lukewarm water

  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)

  • As much Cinnamon as desired for scent and color.

  • A few drops of food dye (this will not be a true color as the cinnamon makes the dough a darker brownish-tan color, so choose wisely. A bright orange would make for a nice fall orange. But obviously you can try whatever)

Directions:

Mix all dry ingredients into a pot. You can choose to add the cinnamon now, or let your child mix it into the dough when it's done and cooled off. Next add the water and oil and food dye. If you add the food dye later, it won't mix as well and get allllllll over your hands. Not to mention be a looooot of kneeding to keep it from bleeding dye. You can do this if you want several colors, it's just annoying. Once that's mixed together, cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Eventually it will start thickening up and start to form into a ball. Once it's really a ball and not sticking to the sides so much, take it off the heat and put it onto something to cool and kneed. Parchment/wax paper works, same with a large plate or cutting board. Kneed it for a bit while it cools. This dough is awesome, very soft, and last a long time! Up to three months if you store properly.

This is where I got the original recipe from. I use this alllll the time. While you can find this same recipe lots of places around the internet, here's the link to the one I've used in the past and based this off of: https://www.iheartnaptime.net/play-dough-recipe/
