This is a really fun activity to learn about size comparison, that can be tweaked for many themes and based off what you have available.
You'll need:
Jar (s)
Sand
Shells
Small balls
Other items
Directions:
Have your child help you fill a jar with large items, such as ocean animal toys. Once it's pretty full, ask them what else will fit. Use a small object, such as small shell pieces or pom poms, to fill in some holes. Ask them what else will fit? Next, fill the jar with sand.
Secondly, fill another jar yourself. You can use ocean themed toys and then fill the rest of the jar with water. You can fill the jar with various craft supplies. Keep it pretty simple (only a few different items). Have them guess how many of each item is in the jar. It is good to have one jar with larger objects that is countable, then another jar with 1 type of object they can count, and one they just have to guess (like in the 30's or 40's). Then, have one jar with sand or something similarly small and impossible to actually count. Let them guess! If they are guessing numbers that are easy to quantify, show them what that number actually looks like in other objects, then have them guess how much is in the jar again.
