This is a fun way to turn a regular nature walk into an educational activity. If you have a measuring tape, bring it! If not, no problem. You can find various household objects to measure before your walk, to give a sense of height. You can measure smaller plants like flowers and bushes to get an idea of those heights, and of course, yourself and your child. Once your child has a sense of different heights, have them guess how tall different trees are. You might be able to find smaller trees you could mostly measure. Then, you can compare to the trees around it. Ex: that tree looks *double* the one we measured. Double means the small tree, plus the same height on top of it. Double you would be "_". Double that small tree would be "_". For trees 5 ft and under, you can add on your fingers to show double. You could have them guess how many of them it would take to be as tall as the tree. Or how many cars, houses, dragons, etc. See where it takes you. This gives a real life measurement, a chance for their imagination to soar, and something to do for children who get bored of walks.
