Make Your Own Story

Writer's picture: Elizabeth GrussElizabeth Gruss

This is a really fun activity to let your child's imagination soar! Using what they already know about ocean life, have them create their own ocean animal! Ask them questions like, 'Where does your animal live? Cold water, hot water, by the beach or deep in the ocean?', 'How many eyes does your animal have? Do they need eyes if they are deep in the ocean?', 'How does your animal swim? With fins? With flippers? With tentacles?" They may draw this animal, or just discuss. Next, have them think of a story for their animal. Does the animal have a family? What does the animal do first thing in the morning? Does the animal go to school? Does the animal go to work? Let the story unfold and ask questions if need be. Your child will most likely continue to think of stories for this animal, and probably think of more characters! It's a super fun way to "write" stories before they can write words.
