Numbers and Letters in the Trees

Writer's picture: Elizabeth GrussElizabeth Gruss

This is a fun way to make a nature walk educational late fall and winter. When you are on your walk, look up in the trees or in bushes and see what you can find. When you look for letters and numbers, usually you can find many. Just looking out my window in the summer right now, I can see two large branches crossing to make a very large letter X, a letter Y from one branch coming off another. a few little t's, an upside down J in the bushes, a few upside down U's in the bushes, little r's from small lower branches in the trees... the list goes on and on. You can also look at the ground and see what is growing or has fallen to create letters, numbers, and shapes. This is a very engaging way for children to use their knowledge. You can bring letter cards and see if you can match them all, or try to find letters in order for a word (their name?). The possibilities are endless!
