We will begin exploring number value with playdough.
You'll Need:
-Number Value Print Out
-Playdough
Directions:
Print out the number value mats or make your own. If you'd like, you can laminate these so they last longer, put in plastic sleeves, or glue on top of cardboard and cut to shape. While this goes up to 20, you can choose to put out 1-5, 1-10, 5-10, 10-20, or a random assortment of a few mats. You should not expect your child to sit and do every mat in order.
Place out playdough tools you think would work well, such as a a cutting tool and maybe a roller. Show them how to make pieces to use as value markers if you've never done an activity like this. This could be cutting pieces to place on the value spots, rolling into balls, or using a playdough shape cutter (or cookie cutter) to use as the value marker. You can show them how to make 'worms' or cut shapes to fill in the numbers, or not! If they just want to play with the playdough without the number mats, that's totally fine too! They are still getting the exposure and will make numbers and value markers when they want to. Plus, they working on other skills such as independent play, focus, and building valuable muscle strength needed to be able to write. Playdough is a pre-writing activity in itself (which is needed to write numbers and equations). Don't push!
