Shell Counting Song

Writer's picture: Elizabeth GrussElizabeth Gruss

Counting songs are an important part of any daycare and preschool curriculum. Not only does it help with memory and counting, but also fosters connection when everyone is singing and playing together. For this, we will be using "5 little monkeys" but changing the words. Using props in story and counting songs is a great reinforcement that connects the word of the number to the quantity. In the Oceans Binder print out, there are numbered shells and crabs to cut out to use with this song. It also becomes a matching game!

The Song (sing to 5 Little Monkeys)

1 little shell laying on the shore

The waves rolled in and brought one more

There was one but now there's two

Mr. Hermit Crab doesn't know which one to choose

2 little shells laying on the shore

The waves rolled in and brought one more

There was two but now there's three

Mr. Hermit Crab doesn't know which one it'll be

3 little shells laying on the shore

The waves rolled in and brought one more

There was three but now there's four

Mr. Hermit Crab doesn't need anymore

4 little shells laying on the shore

The waves rolled in and brought one more

There was four but now there's five

Mr. Hermit Crab doesn't know what to try

5 little shells laying on the shore

The waves rolled in and brought 4 friends

Now Mr. Hermit Crab has shells to share

And they all lived happily ever after, the end!
