Ten Apples Up On Top Book Project

Ten Apples Up On Top is one of our favorites. It's a great counting book that can be incorporated into dramatic play.
For this book project, we will be balancing pom poms (or whatever you have to sub, pictured below is rolled up pipe cleaners) on top of paper towel roll trees.
The day before, you can have your kids paint these "trees", let dry, and use them for the project. Or, obviously decorate with markers and stickers, etc, if you don't have a paint appropriate space.
When your tree trunks are ready, cut out ovals from green constriction paper to place on top (obviously you don't have to use green!). Set up the pom poms and preschool tweezers next to the tree set ups, making a full spot for each child. Let them practice placing them on top, and counting how many they can balance on top! This should turn to a pretty silly game when they start to see them fall over. You also could place markings on the green top to place the pom poms, perhaps by color, if you'd like to add a sorting/critical thinking aspect. Older preschoolers might enjoy setting up their spots, so you could leave the items together on the table, or in a tub on a shelf for them to take out and set up themselves. Tin foil rolls tend to be sturdier, so feel free to save those up (ask parents to send them in instead of throwing them away!), you could even have a tub with those and rotate projects, or add to your construction area.
